Parallel Urbanism

2007 - Masterplanning, Landscape

The capital city of Ethiopia with a estimated population of 4.5 million rises between 2.5% and 5% per year. This growth is followed by a unprecedented building and developing boom that is not addressing the habitants lifestyle.

By focusing on Market De-centrality, we seek to establish both long-term sustainability in the city’s most sensitive zones and to enable the informal economy to strategically support the implementation of Structure Plan elements Urban Road Network, Housing and Greenways & Water Services.

The project, identified as ‘parallel urbanism’, as recognition of three ways in which this was the case - physically, programatically, and socio-economically. This is illustrated by the three diagrams above (l-r): the first shows two key systems of physical parallels; next, the W/E roads and parallel active and passive program; last, a scenario for parallel formal and informal actors/actions.

This project was develop in cooperation with Noboru Kawagishi and Matthew Skjonsberg and in coordination with the Marc Angelil’s Chair in ETH Zurich, Addis Ababa University, Ayat Real Estate and Addis A. City Administration.
